Startup Story Of Rolling Cones

Startup Story Of Rolling Cones

“JEWELS OF ABU DHABI” Reading this, if you think this is the name of some huge jewellery business, then you are highly mistaken. This is the name of an ice cream dish at ROLLING CONES, Vadodara. Intrigued, right?

This is the story of a man who did BBA to MBA and then finally LLB, and came up with this idea to uplift those traditional plain scoops of ice creams to little pops of heaven in your mouth giving you a supreme feel of fine dining in the sanskari Nagri Vadodara.

Whether you are a student or an entrepreneur, the tale of ROLLING CONES, founded by Mr. Vedang Shah is definitely worth knowing, for all to get inspired from.

How the idea popped:

Vedang Shah went to Singapore for an internship during his first year of LLB. During his time there, he went to different places and was really amazed to see that some of the ice creams and dessert dishes there were inspired by the Chinese cuisine. And he questioned that we have such diverse cuisines in India, then why not start something similar that is unique and creative in the genre of ice creams in India.

Also ice-creams being the all time favorite food of him and his mother, the drive to implement this idea gained momentum and he flew back to India and started his journey to establish his idea.

His journey:

“I left my job in Mumbai and came to Baroda to start a new business venture”, says the founder of Rolling Cones.

He then started his LLB at MSU. For 2 years, after completing his classes and court sessions in the morning, he would begin his detailed research process in the evening.Though he had this hectic routine, there wasn’t a minute that he didn’t enjoy. This is what happens when you do what you love and want. Third year was the time when Rolling Cones saw the light of day. He opened his outlet on the second day of his final exam and that time was a little challenging for him as he had to manage things like production at factory, human resources, developing the menu etc. But at the end everything got beautifully managed as his vision was bigger than his fears.

As a result of this hard work, Rolling cones today has the biggest factory plant of ice cream in the city Vadodara.

Challenges faced:

When asked about his challenges, he said that every day was a challenge in his initial days as he had no prior experience of setting up a business like this.

One of the biggest challenges he faced was to handle HR as he didn’t have the idea about who to recruit or what are the expectations of people when they join the company and also setting up the HR policies.

He was also scared of accounting and the sanitisation process that he would have to maintain.

But after some time they learned and mastered everything and these challenges didn’t persist for a long time.

Rolling cones Success:

Vedang Shah saw huge success in a very short time frame with Rolling cones. People of Baroda started loving and enjoying this unique concept of ice cream dishes. Within 2 years of rolling cones, he started taking big catering projects around Gujarat and Maharashtra. Till today, he had done around 500+ projects wherein he served his ice cream dishes at some of the biggest events conducted by huge cricketers, politicians, businessmen etc.

Future of Rolling cones:

After 4 years of rolling cones, Vedang Shah now aims to make franchise of his venture all over India. He is aiming places like Rajasthan, Punjab and Delhi to expand his business and make more people have the delight to enjoy his ice creams.

A message to all the customers of Rolling Cones from him:

“Don’t let go of your sweet cravings. Just enjoy the icre creams because your safety is our responsibility.”

Insights into his thoughts and beliefs:

This is what he has to say about his business mantra, “I believe that your network is your net worth. And I think in business life, emotional intelligence is the key to success.

Here are some of the book recommendations from him:

1. Good to Great

2.Think and Grow Rich

3. Who will cry when you die?

Vedang Shah also believes in the Law of Attraction and says that “If you believe that you can do it, half of the work is done.”

Fancy Menu at Rolling Cones:

If you had visited Rolling cones before, you would know that they have very different and thoughtful names of the dishes like ‘Jewels of Abu Dhabi’ and ‘Jodhabai’s favorite’. No where in the menu he has incorporated traditional ice cream flavours like Rajbogh or vanilla. 80% of his flavours are inventions. Initially he had around 100 flavours in his menu. Later he took inspiration from the film ‘Founder’ and decided to narrow down his menu.

He also mentions that he spends more time in deciding the names of the dishes than actually preparing them. He has given individual identity to all the dishes after researching a lot about what his customers would enjoy and he sees great response to the way the branding of dishes have been done.

Team Prinkit.in Visited Rolling Cones to interview Mr. Vedang. This became one of the most exciting interviews we did so far!
